Baseball edged by Catholic University

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Penn State Berks baseball team suffered a 9-4 setback to Catholic University in a non-conference contest at Pelicans Ballpark at the Ripken Experience.

The Nittany Lions (2-1) out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning and tacked on another run in the third to build a 3-0 lead. But the Cardinals (7-0) broke through for six runs in the bottom of the fifth and added another in the sixth to go ahead 7-3. Berks put up a run in the top of the eighth, before Catholic countered with two runs in their half of the inning to conclude the scoring.

Pearce Harhigh matched a career-high after going 4-for-4 with a stolen base. Tyler Comport went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI, and a run scored, while Toby Welk finished 2-for-5 with a run scored. Dalton Hughes and Mason Pennypacker both had a hit and scored a run, while Cory Fox and Seth Endy each recorded a hit.

Brandon Griesemer struck out three batters in 4 1/3 innings of work. Drew Skrocki tossed 2/3 and Mitch Amenta chucked the final 3.0 innings.

The Nittany Lions return to action with a doubleheader against Dean College on Wednesday, March 7. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 10 a.m.
