Offense powers Nittany Lions to sweep of Dean

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Penn State Berks offense was banging on all cylinders and the pitching staff came through strong as the Nittany Lions swept Dean College by scores of 18-2 and 17-8 at the Ripken Experience on Wednesday afternoon.

In the opener, the Nittany Lions (4-1) plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the first and three more in the second for a 5-0 lead. The Bulldogs (2-4-1) pushed across two runs in the top of the fourth, but Berks answered with two in their half of the inning. Berks then tacked on four in fifth and seven more in the sixth to put the game well out of reach.

Calen Reigner earned his first win on the mound after tossing 5.2 very effective innings. The sophomore right-hander scattered four hits and allowed two runs, while striking out four batters and walking two. Matt Wagner made a strong collegiate debut, striking out two and not allowing any base runners in 1 1/3 innings.

The No. 3 and 4 spots in the order were perfect for the game, no matter who was in that spot. Toby Welk went 4-for-4 with three RBI, two runs scored, and two doubles, while Tyler Kreitz drove in two runs with a pinch hit double in the sixth. Brandon Griesemer was 3-for-3 with an RBI and a runs scored and pinch hitter Tate Yergey was 1-for-1 with a runs scored and one run batted in. Cory Fox (2-for-4) and Pearce Harhigh (2-for-5) both had a single, triple, and drove in a run. Tyler Comport was 2-for-5 at with one RBI and a run scored. Seth Endy and Dalton Hughes each scored three times, while both also were 1-for-4 at the plate with an RBI.

Berks kept the offense rolling in the start of the second game, with two runs in the top of the first inning. Dean used four hits, two walks, and one Berks error to score five runs in the bottom of the first to go ahead 5-2. Both teams plated a run in the third inning, before the Nittany Lions were able to knot the game a 6-all in the fourth. Endy put Berks ahead in the fifth with a two-out triple and scored on a wild pitch. They added to the lead with four runs in the sixth, while the Bulldogs got back two in the bottom half giving Berks an 11-8 edge. The Nittany Lions put the game out of reach with seven runs in the top of the seventh.

Kreitz finished the contest 3-for-3 with three RBI, two runs scored, two walks, one stolen base and a double. Endy went 2-for-3 with two triples, two RBI, and two runs scored, while Comport was also 2-for-3 with one triple, one stolen base and three runs scored. Griesemer (1-for-2) drove in three runs and scored three runs, while Dante Salerno (1-for-4) scored a team-high four runs and had a stolen base. Austin Madeja chipped in two hits and drove in a career-high three RBI.

Alex Laudenslager overcame a rough first inning to pick up the win on the hill. The freshman right-hander tossed six innings, scattering nine hits and allowing eight runs (six earned) and striking out three batters. Ben Wanner struck out two batters in a 1-2-3 seventh inning.

The Nittany Lions will wrap up the spring break trip with two games on Thursday, March 8. They will face Bridgewater (Va.) College at 9 a.m., followed by Christopher Newport University at 12 p.m.
