Gettysburg pulls away late from Nittany Lions

GETTYSBURG, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team rallied to tie the game late, but Gettysburg pulled away to down the Nittany Lions 13-8 in a non-conference contest on Friday afternoon at Kirchhoff Field.

The Nittany Lions drop to 5-7 on the season, while the Bullets improve to 6-10 overall.

Gettysburg combined for three runs over the fourth and fifth innings to build an 8-3 lead. Berks was able to chip at that lead with a run in the top of the sixth after Tyler Kreitz singled and Dalton Hughes was able to score from third when a Bullets threw the ball away trying to get Kreitz going into second base. The Nittany Lions got back two more runs in the sixth with Hughes driving in Cory Fox with a fielder's choice and Kreitz singling home Toby Welk from third.

In the top of the eighth, Tyler Comport reached base on a fielder's choice and Pearce Harhigh, who led off the inning with a single, came around to score to make it an 8-7 ballgame. With two outs on the board, Comport took from first base and got the pitcher to step off the rubber and start a run down. The shortstop attempted to run Comport back and the throw was mishandled by the first baseman to allow Dante Salerno to score from third with the tying run.

In the bottom of the eighth, Gettysburg took advantage of two hits, two walks, and three Berks errors en route to five runs and a 13-8 lead.

Kreitz finished the game 2-for-3 with one RBI and was hit by a pitch two times and Fox also had a multi-hit game with a 2-for-4 effort at the plate. Mason Pennypacker and Damian Mace each tallied a hit and drove in a run in the second inning.

Brandon Griesemer got the start and went the first three innings, before Drew Skrocki followed with 1.1 innings of relief. Jameson Glass allowed two hits in the final 3.2 innings of action, he also struck out a pair of batters.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Immaculata University for a non-conference contest on Wednesday, April 4 at 4 p.m.
