Nittany Lions edged by Keystone College

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team suffered a 9-6 setback to visiting Keystone College in a non-conference contest on Wednesday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

The Giants (11-5) jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the top of the first inning, before Berks was able to use some small ball and crafty base running for five runs in the bottom of the third. The Nittany Lions (5-6) tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth to build a 6-3 lead. Keystone chipped away at its deficit with one in the sixth and pushed across three runs in the seventh to go ahead 7-6. The Giants added to their lead with one run in both the eighth and ninth innings.

In the five run third inning, Berks had five hits, with just one making its way out of the infield. Cory Fox led off with a bunt single and quickly stole second base. Dalton Hughes put down such a nice sacrifice bunt that it turned into a hit and moved Fox up to third base. Hughes then stole second base and Fox stole home to pull off the double steal. After a walk to Toby Welk, Brandon Griesemer squared around for a sacrifice bunt. He also dropped a pearl down the third base line and beat out the throw for a single to load the bases. Tyler Comport followed with a single to right center field to plate Hughes and Welk and tying the game at 3-all. Pearce Harhigh grounded out to the shortstop, but was able to bring in Griesemer, who got to third on Comport's single. Seth Endy beat out a roller to shortstop to put runners at the corners with one out. The Keystone pitcher got a strike out for the second out, but Endy swiped second base and Comport stole home to cap off the scoring.

Berks got its final in the fifth inning when Comport led off with a triple to right center and Harhigh followed with a single to shallow right-field over the drawn in infield.

Starting pitcher Sean Pavlik overcame a shaky start of the game to finish with 6.0 solid innings of work. The junior, right-hander scattered six hits and allowed four runs, while striking out four batters and issuing one walk. Calen Reigner and Alex Laudenslager combined for the final 3.0 innings pitched, Laudenslager struck out one batter.

The Nittany Lions collected 10 hits, three of which went for extra bases. Comport went 2-for-3 with one triple, one stolen base, two RBI and two runs scored, while Welk was 2-for-4 with one double, one triple, and a run scored. Harhigh also collected two hits, finishing 2-for-5 with two RBI. Fox went 1-for-4 with two stolen bases and a run scored and Hugh finished 1-for-4 with a stolen base and one runs scored.

The Giants were led by Mohammed Hussein, who went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run and two runs scored. Christa Panzarella was 1-for-5 with two runs batted in, while Johann Paniagua went 1-for-2 with two runs scored.

Berks had strong defense throughout the game, turning two double plays and recording a pair of outfield assists. They got out of the top of the first when Endy flipped to Harhigh at short, who fired to Griesemer at first for two. In the fourth inning, Endy fielded a ball up the middle and stepped on second before tossing over to Griesemer for the double play. Keystone got a one out single to deep left center field, but Fox gunned down the runner trying to stretch the hit into a double. In the top of the ninth with runners on a second and third, the hitter sent a single up the middle to score one run, but Austin Madeja pegged the runner out at home.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Gettysburg College for a non-conference contest on Friday, March 30 at 3:30 p.m.
