Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's basketball holds off St. Elizabeth on Senior Day

READING, PA - There were plenty of reasons for the Penn State Berks women's basketball team to celebrate on Wednesday night. The evening began with honoring Mackenzie Huber for Senior Day and ended with much rejoicing after defeating the College of Saint Elizabeth, 84-72, and earning the teams first NEAC Postseason berth since the 2010-11 season.

Berks jumped out to a 27-17 lead in the first quarter, but the Eagles lessened their deficit in the second period to trail just 44-40 at halftime. The Nittany Lions held a 17-11 advantage in the third quarter to hold a 61-51 lead going into the final 10 minutes of play.

The final period did not start out well for Berks, as CSE tallied seven unanswered points over the first 1:18 of action to make it a one-possession game (61-58). Sam Brensinger stopped the rally with a clutch two-pointer from just inside the arc and Deanna Daddona knocked down a pair of free throws to put the lead back up to seven (65-58) with 7:20 to go. The lead fluctuated over the next couple of minutes, going down as flow as four and up to as high as nine. CSE made it a five point game (80-75) with 1:48 left, but Melissa Martin hit a pair of critical foul shots to add some breathing room. Abbie Carr had a blocked shot and the Nittany Lions eventually got a deadball rebound on the ensuing possession. Huber came up with a big defensive board in the final 45 seconds and Kylie Herman made 1-of-2 free throws to add the final margin of victory.

Following the pregame ceremony, Huber came out of the gate on fire and went 6-of-6 from the field to collect a season-high 13 points in the first half of action. Herman had a strong first half as well with 10 points, but turned up her level of play with 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting in final 20 minutes of action. Melissa Martin had a solid all-around performance with 12 points, eight rebounds, and six assists, while Jennifer Martin chipped in nine points, six boards, and four assists. Carr collected eight points, to go along with a team-high 11 rebounds and two blocked shots. Brensinger tallied all seven points in the fourth quarter to stave off the Eagles comeback attempt.

Deja Ingram led CSE with 21 points, 16 boards, and five blocks. Kamille Jacobs chipped in 20 points and Rakiyah Sellers followed with 19.

The Nittany Lions finish the regular season with an overall record of 10-11 and 7-5 in NEAC South Division action. They will await the outcome of division games this weekend to figure out who their opponent, but no matter what will be the No. 3 seed and travel for a quarterfinal round game on next Tuesday. The winner between Penn State Abington and Gallaudet University will finish as the second seed and will host Berks, the loser will be the fourth seed and travel to No. 1 seed Lancaster Bible College.
