Nittany Lions fall to Gallaudet in NEAC Quarterfinal round

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Penn State Berks women's basketball team fought from the opening tip until the final whistle, but ultimately found themselves on the wrong end of a 67-62 decision to Gallaudet University in the quarterfinal round of the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Tournament on Tuesday evening.

Both teams struggled with their shooting in the opening period, with the Bison taking a 13-9 lead. GU outscored Berks by two points in the second quarter (17-15) to carry a 30-24 advantage into the break.

The Bison held a seven-point lead (41-34) with 3:36 left in the third period, before Abbie Carr made a pair of layups and Kylie Herman knocked down a 3-pointer at the buzzer to make it 41-all going into the final quarter.

GU built its largest lead of the game at 11-points (62-51) with 1:22 to go. The teams were exchanging points at the foul line before Mackenzie Huber drilled a 3-pointer to pull within four points (63-59) with: 22 seconds left. Herman was fouled on a 3-pointer and made all three of her shots at the line to make it a one possession game (65-62) with 10 seconds to go. Unfortunately for Berks, the Bison converted both shots at the free throw line to put the game out of reach.

Herman netted a career-high 29 points and pulled down a team-best 13 rebounds to lead the Nittany Lions. Jennifer Martin also notched a double-double after putting up 10 points and grabbing 14 boards. Martin also handed out a team-high four assists. Carr added eight points – six coming in the second half – to go along with six rebounds and two blocked shots. Melissa Martin chipped in seven points, six boards, and three steals, while Deanna Daddona had four points. Sam Brensinger had two boards and recorded a pair of steals in the final minute of the fourth quarter comeback bid.

Hannah Nield paced the Bison with 23 points and 16 boards, while Sabina Shish followed with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Kelsey Hudson (16 boards) and Lawjen Ashmore (11 boards) helped the Bison to a 66-48 advantage in rebounds.

Berks finished 31.1% (23-of-74) from the floor and were 58.3% (14-for-24) at the foul line, while the Bison shot 28.8% (21-of-73) from the field and were 69.7% (23-for-33) on the line.

While it is disappointing to see the season come to a close, there were plenty of achievements to celebrate from both short-term and long-term perspectives. The 2017-18 team reached the NEAC Postseason for the first time since the 2010-11 season. They finished the year 10-12 overall, which marks the most wins since that 2010-11 season. This year's team had the highest scoring average (68.9 points per game) and best field goal percentage (38.4%) in program history, while the 3-point shooting percentage (29.9%) was second best and assists (321) were third most.

Individually, Huber got to witness first-hand the amount of progress made over the last four years. Huber, who is the lone senior on the team, went from being a part of a three-win team in 2014-15 to seeing this year's squad reach the postseason. She made 70 3-pointers throughout her career, and not as clutch as the one she made in the final minute of tonight's game. Huber ranks among the top-10 all-time in program history for 3-pointers made, 3-point percentage (29.5%), rebounds (306), games played (82), and games started (62).

The team had several players etch their names all over the record books with single-season accomplishments. Carr finished as the single-year record holder with 41 blocked shots, while Daddona was third in 3-pointers made (43) and Herman was fifth in scoring average (18.6) and field goals made (167). Jennifer Martin shots 46.8% from the field this season, which ranks as the sixth best in a program history.
