Women’s basketball rally falls short in setback to Wilson

CHAMBERSBURG, PA – The Penn State Berks women's basketball team fought back from a 28 point deficit in the second half, but the game-winning attempt from half court smacked high off the glass as time expired to give Wilson College a 76-74 victory on Sunday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions drop to 9-11 overall and 6-5 in the NEAC South Division, while the Phoenix move to 10-13 on the year and 4-6 in the division.

Wilson led 15-9 after the first period and outscored the Nittany Lions 26-12 in the second quarter to take a 41-21 lead into the halftime break. The Phoenix opened up the third quarter on a 10-2 run to gain their largest lead of the day at 28 points. Berks closed out the final five minutes of the period on a 21-6 run to cut the deficit to 13 points.

The Phoenix came out strong in the fourth quarter and put their lead up to 18 points (66-48) with 8:06 left in regulation. The Nittany Lions went on a quick 7-0 run, but Wilson built its cushion back up to 17 (73-58) with 4:18 to play. The Berks defense forced four turnovers and two missed shots, while the offense rattled off 10 straight points to make it a 73-67 game with 1:03 left on the clock. After Wilson went 1-for-2 at the free throw line, Kylie Herman knocked down a 3-pointer to pull within four points. Jennifer Martin hit a jumper in the paint with 19 seconds left to make it 74-72. The Phoenix made both of their free throws, but Martin made another jumper to keep the deficit at two points. Wilson missed both free throws and Berks got the rebound with four seconds to go. Jennifer Martin quickly sent a pass ahead to Melissa Martin, who got off a half court shot as time expired, but the shot bounced high off the backboard.

Jennifer Martin and Herman finished tied for the team lead with 17 points apiece. Martin had a team-high nine rebounds and three blocked shots, while Herman added seven boards and dished out three assists. Deanna Daddona chipped in 13 points and Melissa Martin had 11 to round out the Nittany Lions scoring in double figures. Mackenzie Huber added eight points and two steals, while Sam Brensinger recorded seven points and two assists.

Ashley Henderson led all scorers with 30 points after finishing 7-of-10 from 3-point range. Jasmine Wallace had 17 points, nine rebounds, and four assists, while Lindsey Purvis contributed 12 points and six boards.

Berks shot a combined 21.9% (7-of-32) in the first half, but went 58.8% (20-of-34) in the second half. They also went 6-of-9 from long distance in the second half, after missing all nine of their attempts in the opening 20 minutes.

The Nittany Lions will host the College of Saint Elizabeth in a NEAC South Division contest on Wednesday, February 14 at 8 p.m. Prior to the game, the Nittany Lions will honor Huber for Senior Day.
