Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's basketball holds on for win over Bryn Athyn

BRYN ATHYN, PA - The Penn State Berks women's basketball team made a couple of strong defensive stands down the stretch to secure a 55-51 victory on the road over Bryn Athyn College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Saturday afternoon at Asplundh Field House.

The Nittany Lions improve to 9-10 on the season and 6-4 in NEAC South Division play, while Bryn Athyn drops to 6-18 overall and 1-10 in the division. Berks currently sits in the third place in the South Division and trail Penn State Abington (7-3 NEAC South) for second place by just one game. Lancaster Bible, who clinched the No. 1 seed in the south, and the whichever team finishes in second place will host a NEAC Quarterfinal round contest on Tuesday, February 20.

The Nittany Lions made their first two shots of the game to open up the first quarter, but went cold and missed the next six shots until a layup by Sam Brensinger with 3:49 left in the period. For the first quarter of play, Berks shot just 4-of-14 from the floor and were 1-for-2 at the free throw line. Luckily, the Lions did not shoot much better and led by just a 15-9 margin heading into the second quarter or play. Both teams improved their shooting in the second quarter, with the Nittany Lions outscoring Bryn Athyn by a 21-15 clip to head into the halftime break knotted at 30-all.

Out of the intermission, Kylie Herman got the put-back off of her own miss to give Berks a two-point lead with 8:31 left in the quarter. The Nittany Lions did not give up that lead and expanded it to as much as 12 points, before a pair of free throws by the Lions cut it to 10 heading into the fourth quarter. Berks could not put the ball in the net to start the final period and Bryn Athyn was able to cut its deficit to three (45-42) with 5:15 left in the game. The Nittany Lions tallied their first points of the quarter when Elise Paskowski drained a jumped with 4:56 to play.

Clinging to a three point lead, Jennifer Martin got a steal but the Lion defense forced a turnover to get the ball right back. Julia Bookwalter then came up with a clutch steal and the Lions were forced to foul a couple of times until they eventually put Deanna Daddona on the line. The junior guard hit 1-of-2 free throws to go up 53-49. On the ensuing possession, Brensinger stole the ball at mid-court and was immediately fouled. She then knocked down both foul shots to add some breathing room with a five point advantage. Bryn Athyn came down the court and got a layup, but Berks was able to drain the clock with a great game of keep away before Melissa Martin was finally fouled with seven seconds left. She hit both free throws and Berks was able to dribble out the clock following a Lion basket with two seconds to go.

Herman finished with a team-high 18 points, 12 of which came in the first half. The sophomore guard also had seven rebounds (five offensive), five assists, three blocks, and one steal in 37 minutes of action. Jennifer Martin notched her third straight double-double after recording 15 points and a team-best 13 boards. In addition, Martin had a season-high six steals and handed out two assists. Melissa Martin chipped in seven points, nine rebounds, and four steals, while Brensinger added six points and also had four steals.

Zeniyah Sanders had 20 points, 11 rebounds, six steals, and five blocked shots, all of which led the Lions. Clayshonia Cogmon also tallied a double-double with 13 points and 10 boards, while Allie Warren had 11 points and nine rebounds.

For the game, Berks won the battle of the boards by a 49-46 margin and forced Bryn Athyn into 26 turnovers, while committing 22 of their own. The Nittany Lions shot 31.9% (22-of-69) from the floor and 58.8% (10-for-17) at the line, compared to 30.0% (18-of-60) and 68.4% (13-for-19) by the Lions.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Wilson College for a NEAC South contest on Sunday, February 11 at 2 p.m.
