Men's basketball edged in double OT by Gallaudet

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Penn State Berks men's basketball battled back at the end of regulation and in the first overtime before being edged by Gallaudet University, 104-11, in double overtime in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions led 40-36 at halftime, but Gallaudet tallied the first 10 points of the second half to take a 46-40 lead. Berks was forced to play catch up over the next couple of minutes and eventually took the lead back around the midway point and were ahead 64-60 with 9:25 left in regulation. The Bison took the lead and were up by as many as eight points (77-69) with 3:16 to play. The Nittany Lions closed that gap and were able to tie the score at 80-all with 25 seconds left when Matt Seip hit a runner in the lane and knocked down his free throw. Neither team was able to find the game-winner down the stretch.

The first overtime saw the Bison score the first four points and eventually a five point advantage with 3:14 left on the clock. Trailing by three with under 30 seconds left, Latrell Carroll went to the line twice and made 3-of-4 shots to even the score at 92-92. Berks was whistled for a foul with under 1 second left on the clock, but the Gallaudet player missed both free throws. E'drise Hightower heaved up a last second shot from beyond half court that hit off the backboard and the front of the rim, narrowly missing a heroic highlight.

Hightower made the a pair of free throws early in the second overtime to give the Nittany Lions their first lead since midway in the second half. Gallaudet then responded with five unanswered points to go up by three points (97-94) with 3:57 left. Hightower hit a pair of free throws and Carroll made a layup to keep Berks within one point of the Bison. Seip sunk both of his shots at the foul line with 49 seconds left to give the Nittany Lions a 100-99 lead. But the home squad knocked down a 3-pointer with 21 seconds left and iced the game with a couple of free throws with 11 seconds to go.

Seip matched his career-high with a contest-best 31 points on 10-of-19 shooting from the floor. The senior forward connected on 3-of-6 from long distance and was a perfect 8-for-8 at the charity stripe. He filled out his stat line with six rebounds, four assists, three steals, and two blocked shots in 45 minutes of action. Seip currently ranks fifth in scoring in the NEAC with his 19.0 points per game average.

Both teams made plenty of trips to the foul line, where Gallaudet shot 69.7% (23-for-33), while the Nittany Lions shot 68.8% (22-for-32). Berks held a 44-36 advantage on rebounds, but the turnover battle was won by the Bison by a 23-13 margin.
