Women's basketball topples LBC in NEAC opener

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's basketball team started off North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) play on the right foot with an electrifying 76-68 victory over Lancaster Bible College in the league opener on Wednesday night at the Beaver Community Center.

The Nittany Lions (2-4, 1-0 NEAC) trailed by two points at the end of the first quarter, but were down by as much as eight points early in the second period. Berks closed out the remaining 7:21 of the quarter on a 15-6 run to take a one point advantage into the halftime break. Both teams finished with 19 points in the third quarter to make it a 55-54 lead for the Nittany Lions going into the final quarter.

Berks recorded the first four points of the quarter and built a six point cushion (65-59) with 5:06 to play. The Chargers (2-4, 0-1 NEAC) got to within three points on two occasions, but each time the Nittany Lions responded. After LBC got back to within four points (72-68) with under 30 seconds left, Deanna Daddona and Kaitlyn Armstrong converted both of their shots at the free throw line to put the game out of reach and giving the Nittany Lions the final margin and largest lead of the game at eight points.

Armstrong was wreaking havoc all game on the offensive and defensive ends of the floor. The sophomore forward established a season-high in points (22), steals (8), and assists (6), which all happened to be game-highs as well. Armstrong grabbed 11 rebounds to notch her third straight double-double. She went 2-of-3 from beyond the arc and 6-of-16 from the field, but her improvement at the foul line was the most impressive of her shooting. After going 8-for-16 in Monday's win over Cedar Crest College, Armstrong was a much more efficient 8-for-10 on Wednesday night.

Daddona followed Armstrong with a 16 point effort, while also notching five boards, four steals, three assists, and two blocked shots. Kylie Herman registered her first double-double of the season after recording 14 points and a season-high 14 boards to go along with four assists and one steal in all 40 minutes of action. Sam Brensinger and Elise Paskowski both finished with eight points and one blocked shot, while Paskowski also grabbed seven rebounds. Abbie Carr chipped in six points and six rebounds, all of which came in the second half.

Lizzy Tilton led the Chargers with 19 points, five assists, and three blocked shots. Hope Hodges added 17 points, followed by Caitlin Hickey with 12. Courtney Goyak finished with a contest-high 19 boards.

The Chargers shot 43.8% from the floor (28-of-64) and 37.5% (9-of-24) from beyond the arc, while Berks was 33.8% (27-of-80) from the field and 29.4% (5-of-17) from long range. The difference, however, was the Nittany Lions going 17-for-25 (68.0%) at the foul line versus 3-for-7 (42.9%) by LBC. Other key components for Berks' victory were winning the rebound battle (48-41) and committing only six turnovers compared to the 18 by the Chargers.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Gallaudet University for a NEAC tilt on Saturday, December 1 at 2 p.m.
