Big third quarter leads WBB to win over Cedar Crest

ALLENTOWN, PA - The Penn State Berks women's basketball team was propelled by a 30-12 advantage in the third quarter and held off a late rally attempt en route to a 74-61 victory on the road over Cedar Crest College on Monday evening.

The Nittany Lions, who earned their first win of the season, took a 28-23 lead into the halftime break. Berks went on an 18-6 run over the final seven minutes of the third period to take a 23 point lead into the final quarter.

The Falcons scored the first eight points of the final period to cut their deficit to 15 points with 8:04 left on the clock. Cedar Crest cut the Nittany Lions lead to 11 around the midway point of the quarter, but Berks pushed its lead back up to 17 with 3:31 to go. The Falcons knocked down a 3-pointer with 2:08 left to make it 68-58, but that is as close as the game would get the rest of the way.

Kaitlyn Armstrong notched her second straight double-double after recording a team-high and personal season-best 18 points and 13 rebounds in 40 minutes of action. The sophomore forward finished just short of a triple-double after picking up seven steals. In addition, Armstrong dished out four assists and registered one blocked shot. She finished 5-of-7 shooting from the floor and picked up eight of her points on the free throw line.

Deanna Daddona matched her best scoring output of the season and tied Armstrong for the team lead with 18 points. The senior guard grabbed seven boards to go along with five steals and three assists. Daddona went just 5-of-14 from the field, but was a perfect 8-for-8 from the foul line.

Sam Brensinger chipped in 14 points and Kylie Herman added 12 to round out the Nittany Lions scoring in double figures. Brensinger knocked down a pair of 3-pointers, while also recording four assists and two steals. Herman, who played all 40 minutes, earned half of her points at the charity stripe, where she went 6-for-7. She also notched three steals, three rebounds, and two assists.

Elise Paskowski grabbed 10 rebounds (6 defensive, 4 offensive), while Abbie Carr finished with seven boards. As a team, the Nittany Lions dominated the glass, nearly doubling the Falcons on rebounds, 47-24.

Cedar Crest finished the game 12-of-34 from 3-point range, with eight coming in the fourth quarter alone, while the Nittany Lions were 2-of-9 from long range. The difference maker was at the free throw line, where Berks went 28-for-41 (68.3%) and the Falcons were just 5-for-8 (62.5%).

The Nittany Lions will host Lancaster Bible College in both teams NEAC opener on Wednesday, November 28 at 6 p.m. Fans coming to the game can get in free of charge with a canned good, non-perishable item, or monetary donation to benefit the Great Berks Food Bank.
