Men's basketball drops OT thriller to Cairn in home opener

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks men's basketball team erased a 10 point deficit in the final 1:03 of regulation, but were unable to keep it going in the extra period as the Nittany Lions fell 108-98 in overtime to Cairn University in a non-conference contest on Tuesday night at the Beaver Community Center.

The Nittany Lions trailed by seven points through the opening 10 minutes of the contest before going on a 25-8 run to go ahead by 10 points with 3:40 until the halftime break. The Highlanders chipped away at the hole and had a buzzer beating layup to make it a 37-35 game in Berks' favor at the half.

In the second half, Cairn tied the game up four different times, but the Nittany Lions immediately went back up ahead in the early going. The Highlanders grabbed their first lead of the second half with 14:23 to go. Over the next seven plus minutes of the game, they increased the lead to double-digits (13 points). From there, E'drise Hightower made a layup and the defense forced a turnover on the ensuing inbound pass. Latrell Carroll forced his way down low for a layup and knocked down his free throw for an old fashioned three-point play. Now trailing 92-87 with 25 seconds left, the Highlanders missed both shots at the foul and and Monty Farmer drilled a 3-pointer with 16 seconds to go to make it a two point game (92-90). Berks fouled right away and the Highlander player made 1-of-2 shots at the line. Trailing by three, Hightower raced down the court and drove the lane where he made an acrobatic layup and was fouled in the process. He hit his free throw to even the score at 93-all with under four seconds remaining. Cairn got off a desperation 3-pointer, but it landed well short of the mark.

In the overtime period, Cairn tallied the first seven points to go ahead 100-93 with 3:15 left. Farmer made a layup and then knocked down a 3-pointer later in the period, but the Highlanders were able to put things away in the final minute.
