Slow start dooms women's basketball in setback to Alvernia

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's basketball team could not recover from a slow start in the 2018-19 season opener as the Nittany Lions fell, 76-62, on the road to Alvernia University on Wednesday night.

The Nittany Lions trailed 38-19 at halftime and trailed by 20 going into the fourth quarter. Berks chipped away at its deficit and got to within in 11 points with 1:31 to play, but they were unable to get any closer the rest of the way.

Deanna Daddona connected on four 3-pointers and finished with a contest-high 18 points. The senior guard dished out a team-best four assists to go along with three rebounds and two steals. Kaitlyn Armstrong chipped in 12 points in her Nittany Lion debut, while also recording six boards, two assists, one blocked shot, and one steal. Junior Sam Brensinger made two 3's and finished with 11 points to go with two assists. Julia Bookwalter and Kylie Herman each notched six points, while Bookwalter also hauled in a team-high seven boards.

Gabriella De Vito and Kiersten Ingram paced the Golden Wolves on offense with 16 points apiece, followed by Maya Cooper with 14. Julia Ewen finished with a game-high eight rebounds.

The Nittany Lions will compete in the Scotty Wood Tournament hosted by Muhlenberg College this weekend. They will face Muhlenberg on Friday, November 16 at 6 pm.
