Women's soccer downs Penn College, 2-0, in regular season finale

WILLIAMSPORT, PA - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team tallied a goal in both halves en route to a 2-0 victory on the road of Penn College in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) regular season finale on Friday evening.

The Nittany Lions improve to 13-3-2 overall and 10-0-1 in the NEAC, while the Wildcats fall to 11-7 on the season and 8-3 in league action. With the win, Berks assured itself a first-round bye and will await the result of the Keuka College/Cazenovia College contest to see where they place in the standings.

Berks held possession of the throughout the early going of the first period, unleashing nine shots (five on goal) over the first 21:10 of the contest, but were still in a 0-0 deadlock on the scoreboard. Finally, at the 22:51 mark of the match, Charlotte Pizzuto broke through with a well placed shot from 10-yards out that deflected off the bottom of the crossbar and into the net. The unassisted score was Pizzuto's third of the season.

The Nittany Lions kept possession for the remained of the half, but did not add to their lead. The second half started out much of the same way as the first, with Berks tallying three shots and two corner kicks over the first 13+ minutes. In the 60th minute, Alexa Lopez tacked on a goal off a feed from Megan Jardine to double the lead to 2-0. The score was Lopez's sixth of the year and the assist was Jardine's ninth of the season.

Berks had several more scoring opportunities, but were ultimately held off the board for the remainder of the contest. Overall, the Nittany Lions outshot Penn College by a 31-1 margin (17-0 on goal) and held a 15-0 advantage on corner kicks throughout the match.

Bristol Pizzuto and Rylee Milligan combined for the shutout victory in net. The Wildcats keeper Taylor Gonzales finished the contest with 15 saves in net.

The NEAC Semifinal and Championship round will either be hosted by Penn State Berks or Keuka College next weekend. The entire playoff standings will be figured out around the conference finish up the regular season tomorrow afternoon.
