Nittany Lions blank Penn College in semifinal

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team will head to its seventh straight conference title contest after topping Penn College, 5-0, in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) semifinal round on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions improve 14-3-2 overall, while the Wildcats drop to 12-8 on the year.

Following a corner kick, Shelby Baker corralled a loose ball and put it into the back of the net at just 2:59 into the match for her fourth goal of the season.

Caitlin Golden doubled the lead less than five minutes later off of a pass from Julia Green. Golden added a second goal in the 13th minute with an assist by Emily Clapper to give Berks a comfortable 3-0 cushion in the early going. With the two goals, Golden upped her national leading total in goals to 37.

The score stayed that way into the halftime break before Clapper notched her 10th goal of the season in the 54th minute. Alexis Schoener assisted on Clapper's score and then tallied a goal of her own at 55:07 with a header off a cross from Baker.

The defensive play from the back unit of Baker, Megan Jardine, Karina Raykova, and Jess Mandeville limited the Wildcats to just one shot, which was not on goal. Bristol Pizzuto and Rylee Milligan combined on the shutout in net for the Nittany Lions.

For the contest, Berks outshot Penn College by a 27-1 margin (16-0 on goal) and held an 11-1 advantage on corner kicks.

In the other semifinal round match, Keuka College defeated Cazenovia College by a 2-0 count.

The Nittany Lions will face Keuka in the NEAC Championship on Sunday, November 4 at 1 p.m. The winner of the title match will earn an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
