Nittany Lions topple Scranton on the road, 1-0

SCRANTON, PA - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team rebounded from a draw over the weekend with a thrilling 1-0 victory on the road over the University of Scranton in non-conference action on Tuesday night. The Nittany Lions improve to 12-3-2 overall, while the Royals are handed their first loss and move to 13-1-2.

Berks had early looks on offense, with a corner kick and a pair of shots by Alexa Lopez over the first 12 minutes of the first half, but could not find a score. Scranton then riffled off a shot in the 14th minute that Bristol Pizzuto got enough of her hand on to tip out of harm's way and into the far post. Both of the teams exchanged shots that were wide of the target over the next few minute.

Caitlin Golden, the leading goal scorer in the nation, was able to break up the scoreless tie when she unleashed a line drive from 25-yards out and into the far upper corner at the 15:56 mark of the match. The senior forward now has 35 goals scored on the season.

The Royals tested Pizzuto again over the next few minutes following the goal, but the sophomore keeper was there to make the stop each time. In the 42nd minute, Scranton's Jessica Letherbarrow had a shot hit off the post to keep the score 1-0 in the Nittany Lions' favor heading into the halftime break.

Scranton recorded the first three shots of the second half, none of which were on target. In the 74th minute, Lopez had a shot tipped by keeper Colleen Berry up and into the crossbar to keep an insurance goal off the board. At the 84:05 mark of the contest, Golden looked like she had another long distance goal, but Berry made a nice leaping save to deny the score.

Following that stop, the Royals made their way down the field quickly and Taylor Stevens put a shot on goal that Pizzuto stopped for her first save of the second half at 84:37. Neither team was able to generate any more chances the rest of the way and the Nittany Lions held on for the 1-0 victory.

Pizzuto finished the contest with four saves, while her counterpart Berry also made four stops. Both teams finished the contest with nine total shots and each squad had two corner kicks (one in each half). The Nittany Lions had five shots on goal, while Scranton had four in the very evenly matched contest.

Golden and Alexis Schoener played solid up top, putting pressure on the Scranton defense and midfield all game. The midfield play of Lopez, Julia Green, Charlotte Pizzuto, Emily Clapper put in great play controlling possession and defending the Royals offensive attacks. Pizzuto was again aided by the magnificent defensive play from the back unit of Shelby Baker, Megan Jardine, Karina Raykova, and Jess Mandeville. JoJo Zolli, Adara Enrique, and Angela Puhl added a spark off the bench for the midfield.

The Nittany Lions will wrap up the regular season with a NEAC contest at Penn College on Saturday, October 27 at 1 p.m.
