Second half outburst leads women's soccer to win over Juniata

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team broke things open with five goals in the second half en route to a 6-0 shutout over Juniata College in a non-conference contest on Tuesday night.

The Nittany Lions (10-3-1) won their sixth straight contest and have outscored the opposition by a 45-2 margin in that time.

Berks came out of the gates firing, recording six shots - all on goal - over the first 20+ minutes of action. They were finally able to break through for a goal at the 21:58 mark after a couple of nice passes set up the score. Charlotte Pizzuto passed a ball over to Alexis Schoener, who then directed the pass directly over to Caitlin Golden. Golden took the pass and laced a line drive past the keeper and just under the crossbar to give Berks a 1-0 edge. The Nittany Lions continued to pepper shots on goal throughout the remainder of the opening half, but Kristin Racis finished with 11 saves in the first 45 minutes to keep it a one goal deficit.

Out of the break, Golden extended the lead with an unassisted goal just 1:39 into the second period when her line drive bounced off the keepers hands and into the net. Less than a minute later, the Eagles (4-9-1) were whistled for a foul in the box and Megan Jardine converted the PK for a 3-0 lead. The score was Jardine's second of the season.

In the 56th minute, Schoener sent a ball from the end line and Golden place inside the near corner to record her third straight hat-trick. Golden has upped her total to 30 goals on the season, which leads all of Division III.

Jardine inserted a corner kick in the 77th minute that Karina Raykova booted out of the air into the top left corner to make it a 5-0 lead for Berks. Alexa Lopez finished off the scoring with a tally in the 88th minute off of a perfect feed from Emily Clapper.

Bristol Pizzuto picked up the win in net after recording three saves. Rylee Milligan registered a save just after checking into the game and combined on the shutout with Pizzuto. Racis finished the contest with 14 saves in net for Juniata.

Berks outshot the Eagles by a 32-7 margin (20-4 on goal) and held an 8-0 advantage on corner kicks.

The team hosted its annual Pink Game fundraiser. The Nittany Lions wore pink t-shirt jersey's to show support, while accepting donations from the crowd and during a half-time kicking contest. They raised $91.00 which will all go toward the Breast Cancer Support Services of Berks County.

The Nittany Lions will travel to upstate New York for a pair of NEAC contests this weekend. They will visit Wells College on Saturday, October 20 at 1 p.m., followed by Keuka College on Sunday, October 21 at 1 p.m.
