Women's soccer downs Cazenovia on Senior Day

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team extended its season best wining streak to five straight after defeating Cazenovia College, 7-2, in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Saturday afternoon.

Prior to the match, the Nittany Lions (9-3-1, 8-0 NEAC) honored its largest senior class in program history. Those seniors that were honored were Shelby Baker, Mackenzie Fredricks, Caitlin Golden, Julia Green, Alexa Lopez, and Monica Pinel.

After those celebrations subsided, the fans found themselves with some more things to cheer on in the early going. At the 7:06 mark of the first half, Golden crossed a ball from the end line that Green was able to leap in the air and knock into the open net for a quick 1-0 lead.

Less than a minute and a half later, Pinel delivered a pass through traffic that Alexis Schoener placed inside the left post to build a 2-0 cushion 9:30 into the contest. Schoener put a rebound into the back of the net in the 15th minute when the goalkeeper made a save on Megan Jardine's shot, but could not hold onto the ball.

The Wildcats (10-4, 6-2 NEAC) kept Berks off the scoreboard for the remainder of the first half and into the start of the second. In the 58th minute, Golden scored off of a cross by Schoener for her first tally of the day. Six minutes later, Golden struck again with a header off of a corner kick by Lopez.

Cazenovia then went on a scoring stretch of its own when Michaela Breeze netted goals in teh 67th and 74th minutes to make it a 5-2 game. Breeze is second in the NEAC with 22 goals scored this season.

Golden responded with her third goal of the contest on a nice pass from Karina Raykova less than a minute after Breeze's second goal. With that score, the senior forward reached the rare accomplishment of scoring 100 career goals. Golden has the single-season program record with 27 goals, surpassing her own school record of 26 goals which she had in 2015 and 2017. The 27 goals and 61 total points are the most in all of the nation in Division III.

Schoener capped off the scoring with a goal in the 88th minute for the first hat trick of her collegiate career. Emily Clapper recorded the assist when her initial shot was mishandled by the keeper, allowing Schoener to head the ball home.

Bristol Pizzuto notched four saves in net, while Macie Arnold and Caitlin Kelleher combined for 16 stops for the Wildcats.

The Nittany Lions will host Juniata College in a non-conference contest on Tuesday, October 16 at 5 p.m. The women's soccer team will host its annual Pink Game fundraiser and will host a halftime goal kick competition.
