Men's soccer wins 1-0 thriller over Caz on Senior Day

READING, PA - Jakob Fischer tallied his first goal of the season at the 8:14 mark of the contest and the defense was able to make the lead hold up in a thrilling 1-0 victory over Cazenovia College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions (5-8-1, 3-5 NEAC) celebrated the illustrious careers and achievements of Gerardo Sosa and Tom Ulrich with Senior Day honors prior to the start of the contest. Sosa and Ulrich then got to do more celebrating after the clock finally struck 00:00 in the second half as Berks earned a much needed win for its playoff aspirations.

Ulrich worked his way down the field and had a shot attempt blocked by a Wildcats (3-9, 2-6 NEAC) defender, giving the Nittany Lions a corner kick. Brenden Valverde took a shot kick off the corner and dribbled in and delivered a pass to Fischer at the top left corner of the box. Fischer then unleashed a line drive over the keeper and into the far back corner of the net for his second career goal and first game-winner.

Sosa rose to the occasion with a solid performance in net that was needed in the 1-0 contest. He recorded a pair of saves over the first 25 minutes of the contest and then made another two stops in the span of four seconds in the 39th minute. The senior keeper was challenged one more time in the opening half, but again was their to answer the call with a save. Sosa made a save in the 69th minute to give him a season-high six saves in net.

Trent Johnson, who entered the game just after Sosa's last save, was tested early with a shot by Lion Vega in the 73rd minute. Johnson was shifting from his left side of the net to the right side, when Vega placed a ball toward the middle of the net. Johnson in mid-air, reached backward and was able to bat the ball out of the air with his fingertips to preserve the 1-0 lead.

A little over two minutes later, Ulrich put a nice shot on net, but Cazenovia keeper Tom Nicholls had an acrobatic save to keep his team in contention. Nicholls thwarted a couple more of the Nittany Lions scoring attempts and the Wildcats found themselves in another position to the game.

Berks was whistled for a foul inside the box in at the 82:45 mark of the contest to set up a penalty kick for Cazenovia. On the attempt, Johnson guessed right as he lunged toward the top left corner of the net. Had the ball been on frame, Johnson was there for the stop, but he was able to let the ball go as it sailed high of the target.

Valverde and Luke Romanoski had shots in the final minutes of play, but neither were able to find the back of the net. The defense continued its high level of play and were able to keep Cazenovia from evening up the match down the stretch.

Sosa earned his program-leading 19th career victory after combining on the shutout with Johnson. Nicholls played solid in net for Cazenovia and finished the day with nine saves.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Wells College for a NEAC contest on Saturday, October 20 at 3 p.m.
