Volleyball edged in five sets by Alvernia

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team found itself on the wrong side a 3-2 decision to Alvernia University in a non-conference contest on Thursday night at the Beaver Community Center.

The Nittany Lions (6-16) eased their way to a 25-10 victory in the first game, but the Golden Wolves (4-12) responded with a dominating 25-17 win in game two. Berks closed out the third set with a 25-22 triumph, but again Alvernia answered back with a 25-17 win in game four. The decisive fifth set starting out strong for Berks with a 3-0 lead, but the Golden Wolves reeled out four straight points. They eventually led 10-6 and closed things out with a 15-11 win in the final set.

Jenna Plitnick, Maddy Kessler, and Abbie Carr finished tied for the team lead with six kills each. Megan Lackman and MacKenzie Reed both had five kills, followed by Abbie Tuel and Madison Hetrick with four apiece. Carr recorded three block assists and one solo block, while Tuel and Reed both chipped in two block assists. Plitnick had a contest-high 19 digs, followed by Madison Wojciechowski with 18. Reed handed out 27 assists and had two service aces, while Wojciechowski notched a team-best three aces.

Paige Stern led the Golden Wolves with 17 kills, 15 digs, five aces, one solo block, and one block assist. Alexis Schwenk registered 30 assists and 10 digs for the Golden Wolves.

The women's volleyball team hosted its annual Pink Game Fundraiser to benefit the Breast Cancer Support Services of Berks County. Donations were collected at the door and during a serving contest between the second and third set, which produced a total $193.76 was raised.

The Nittany Lions will travel to New Jersey for a tri-match on Saturday, October 13. They will open up with the College of St. Elizabeth in a NEAC contest at 11 a.m., followed by a non-conference tilt with FDU-Florham at 1 p.m.
