Men's basketball tops Bryn Athyn, 90-89

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks men's basketball team held off Bryn Athyn College in the closing seconds of regulation to earn a thrilling 90-89 victory in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) action on Saturday afternoon at the Beaver Community Center.

The first half was a back-and-forth battle that saw Bryn Athyn jump out to a quick 5-0 lead, followed by a few lead changes throughout the half. The Nittany Lions took the largest lead of the game for either team at six points (45-39) with 2:23 left in the half, but Bryn Athyn was able to pull within two (47-45) going into the break.

The second half saw the scored tied on 10 occasions and featured 16 lead changes. Berks matched its largest lead of the day with a 61-55 advantage with 14:54 remaining. Bryn Athyn stormed back and matched its own largest lead when they went ahead 71-66 with 10:23 to play. Neither team led by more than three points until Bryn Athyn went up by four (89-85) with 1:32 left.

Berks turned on the ball over on its next possession, but Nelson Hine came up with a huge steal for a breakaway layup to make it a two-point deficit (89-87) with 57 seconds left. The defense trapped on the in-bound pass, as Bryn Athyn tried to break the press a Berks defender deflected the ball to Tyheem Albright, who took two quick dribbles and went up with a lay-in to tie the game at 89-all with 49 ticks left on the clock. Berks caught a break when Bryn Athyn's player missed a pair of shots at the free throw line. Matt Seip pulled down the rebound on the second missed foul shot and was eventually fouled with 19 seconds to go. Seip's first shot rimmed out, but he was able to sink the second
one to put Berks ahead 90-89. Bryn Athyn held on for the final shot of the game, with a layup attempt against a strong effort by the Nittany Lions defenders. The ball bounced off the front of the rim and was snatched by Seip to secure the victory.

Hine recorded a season-best and game-high 24 points, which was one off of his career-high. He finished 10-of-17 from the floor and went 4-of-7 from 3-point range. Hine also handed out a game-high seven assists to go along with six rebounds (tied for team lead) and two steals.

David DiMeo poured in 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the floor. The sophomore guard grabbed six boards and recorded a career-high four blocked shots. Seip chipped in 13 points and grabbed six boards, while Albright had a season-high 10 points and four steals. Dave Polisano tallied eight points, while Brian Contaldi had a span of five unanswered points in a second half rally on his way to seven points.

Lamarr Crenshaw, who was a perfect 8-of-8 from the floor, had 23 points, followed by Larry Stevenson III with 22.

The Nittany Lions will host Lancaster Bible College in NEAC South Division action on Wednesday, January 31 at 6 p.m. The men's squad will team up with the women to host their annual Pink Game fundraiser.
