Strong second half propels WBB to win over Gallaudet

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's basketball team closed out the third quarter on a high note and carried the momentum into the fourth quarter as the Nittany Lions earned a crucial 78-67 victory over Gallaudet University in Saturday afternoon's North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest.

The Nittany Lions (5-8, 3-3 NEAC South) trailed 22-20 at the end of the first period and were down by six points heading into the halftime intermission. Out of the break, the Bison (6-11, 3-4 NEAC South) expanded their lead to nine points very quickly. Berks pulled to within two points a couple of times throughout the third quarter, but Gallaudet went back up by nine (57-48) with 1:16 left in the period. From there, Deanna Daddona drilled a 3-pointer and followed it up with a steal and an assist on a layup by Kylie Herman. After Gallaudet converted on 1-of-2 trips to the foul line, Sam Brensinger snuck in a layup as time expired to get the deficit to three points (58-55).

Daddona opened up the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer that evened the game at 58-all. Jennifer Martin made a basket and hit her foul shot for an old fashioned 3-point play to give Berks a 61-58 lead with 8:20 to play. Melissa Martin recorded five unanswered points to build the lead to eight points (66-58) and extend the 11-0 run to start the quarter. The Nittany Lions recorded the rest of their scoring over the final four minutes from the free throw line, where they went 12-for-13 down the stretch to secure the victory. Berks outscored the Bison by a 23-9 margin in the fourth quarter and 30-10 over the final 11:16 of action.

Jennifer Martin led all scorers with 21 points to go along with five steals and five boards. Herman followed with 20 points and Daddona hit five 3-pointers on her way to 19 points. Melissa Martin recorded 11 points, seven assists, four steals, and four rebounds. Abbie Carr pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds and had three blocked shots. Hannah Neild led the Bison with 15 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Kelli Barnes chipped in 11 points and Emelia Beldon followed with 10. Kelsey Hudson contributed eight points and a contest-high 12 rebounds.
