Slow start dooms women's basketball against St. Elizabeth

MORRISTOWN, N.J. - The Penn State Berks women's basketball team fell into an early hole and were unable to recover in a 73-57 setback to the College of Saint Elizabeth in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Wednesday night.

The Nittany Lions trailed 24-10 at the end of the first quarter and were down by 17 (40-23) at halftime. The Eagles built their lead to 24 points with 5:47 left in the third, before Berks was able to string together some offense. Berks closed out the third period on a 13-5 run to head into the fourth quarter down 16. In the final period, the Nittany Lions pulled within 13 points on a couple of occasions, but were unable to get any closer.

Melissa Martin turned in a strong performance in all 40 minutes of play. The sophomore guard notched a double-double after recording a team-high 21 points and 10 rebounds, while also getting four steals and three assists. Kylie Herman also had a double-double, after adding 11 points and matching Martin for the team lead with 10 boards. Deanna Daddona chipped in 11 points, six rebounds, and three assists, while Abbie Carr had eight points, six rebounds, and two blocked shots.

Rakiyah Sellers finished with a contest-high 25 points to lead the Eagles. Deja Ingram tallied a double-double with 17 points and 18 boards, while also registering four blocks and three steals. Kamille Jacobs added 12 points, followed by Damaris King with 10.

The Nittany Lions return to action at home in NEAC action against Gallaudet University on Saturday, January 20 at 3 p.m.
