Second half surge leads women's b-ball to win over Wilson

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's basketball team made timely baskets and created numerous turnovers in a strong second half surge to pick up a thrilling 74-72 victory over Wilson College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Wednesday night at the Beaver Community Center.

The Nittany Lions (4-5, 2-2 NEAC) led 22-18 after the first quarter, but the Phoenix (5-7, 1-3 NEAC) used a 19-8 second period to take a 37-30 advantage into the break. In the second half, Wilson expanded its lead to 12 points (43-31) with 6:56 left in the third period. Berks then went on a 14-2 run to even the contest at 45-all with 4:33 to go in the period. The teams battled evenly the rest of the quarter to head into the fourth tied up at 57-57.

In the final period, the Phoenix jumped out to a six point advantage just two minutes into the quarter. An 11-2 run by the Nittany Lions gave them a five point lead (72-67) with 3:34 left in regulation. After Wilson pulled within two points, Kylie Herman made a layup with 45 seconds left for a four point cushion. The Phoenix got a lay-in on their end of the floor inch to two points down and then fouled until Berks went to the line. The strategy paid off as the Nittany Lions missed bot shots at the line and after a tie-up on a loose ball, the Phoenix gained possession. With the final seconds ticking off the clock, Ashley Henderson's game-winning attempt from 3-point range sailed wide and was rebounded by Herman to clinch the win.

Herman led the Nittany Lions with 21 points to go along with seven rebounds, four steals, and two assists. Melissa Martin followed with an effort of 20 points, seven boards, six assists, and six steals in 40 minutes of play, while Deanna Daddona added 12 points, eight rebounds, four steals, and three assists. Jennifer Martin chipped in nine points, seven boards, and four assists.

Lindsay Purvis notched a double-double with 21 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Ashley Henderson added 14 points and Jordyn Day followed with 12.

The Nittany Lions will host Morrisville State College in a NEAC Crossover contest with the North Division on Saturday, January 13 at 3 p.m.
