Women's soccer wins fourth straight with win over Gallaudet

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team won its fourth straight contest after blanking Gallaudet University, 6-0, in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Saturday afternoon at Hotchkiss Field.

The Nittany Lions improve to 4-5-1 overall and 3-0 in the NEAC, while the Bison drop to 5-3 on the year and 1-2 in conference play.

Melissa Martin got the scoring started at the 12:25 mark of the opening period with her first of three goals, Charlotte Pizzuto added the assist on the play. Caitlin Golden added her fifth goal of the season with a score in the 25th minute off a feed from Alexa Lopez. The final tally of the first half came on a goal by Megan Jardine in the 34th minute with Martin chipping in the assist.

Jardine opened up the scoring in the second half with a goal at 50:43, Karina Raykova added the assist on the play. Martin then tacked on the final two scores of the match for the Nittany Lions, Jardine had an assist on the score in the 80th minute.

Martin's hat trick was her second this season, the first one coming in a win over Alvernia University. Jardine has scored a goal in each of the four straight wins and her two goals today were a career-high, while her five points were also a personal best.

The defensive unit of Shelby Baker, Mackenzie Fredricks, Raykova and Jess Mandeville limited the Bison attack all day long, allowing only four shots (one on goal). Paige Elmy and Kaylee Frapaul split time in net, with Frapaul making a save on the only shot that was on target. Bison keeper Silvya Levesque made 13 saves in net.

For the contest, Berks outshot the Bison by a 36-4 margin (19-1 on goal) and held a 12-2 advantage on corner kicks.

The Nittany Lions will host Elizabethtown College in a non-conference contest on Monday, October 2 at 7 p.m.
