Women's soccer edged by E-Town, 2-1

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team suffered a 2-1 setback to visiting Elizabethtown College in a non-conference contest on Monday evening.

The Nittany Lions saw its four-game winning streak come to a halt as they drop to 4-4-1 on the year, while the Blue Jays improved 6-3-1 overall.

E-Town got on the board with a goal at the 7:07 mark of the opening period when Madison Burnham collected a loose ball out in front of the goal and snuck it into the net. Over the next 30 minutes, the Nittany Lions applied pressure on the offensive end of the field with seven shots and three corner kicks, but were unable to get the tying score.

Finally in the 40th minute, Berks was able to convert a corner kick into a goal. Alexa Lopez sent a pass into the box and Karina Raykova deflected it into the near corner to even the match at 1-all.

The teams exchanged some scoring opportunities early in the second half, but came up empty. The Blue Jays then struck for another goal when Burnham crossed a ball to Lydia Lawson, who was able to beat the keeper with a shot to the far corner in the 61st minute.

Just after the goal, Melissa Martin and Megan Jardine had shots go just wide of the net. Over the course of the next 20 minutes the ball was in E-Town's offensive third of the field where they had three corners and three shots. In the 82nd minute, Caitlin Golden had a shot blocked to lead to a corner for Berks. Lopez again delivered a nice ball into the box and Raykova headed the ball on target, but the shot hit off the right post and was cleared away by the Blue Jay defenders. Jardine and Lopez both tried for the tying score with shots in the final five minutes, but Hailey Parks made the stop each time.

Paige Elmy turned in a solid effort in net for Berks with three saves, including a beautiful diving stop in the 81st minute. Parks finished the contest with five saves for E-Town.

Berks outshot the Blue Jays by a 17-13 margin (6-5 on goal) and held a 7-4 advantage on corner kicks.

The Nittany Lions will travel to New York for a pair of NEAC contests this weekend. They will face Morrisville State College on Saturday, October 7 at 3 p.m., followed by SUNY Cobleskill on Sunday at 2 p.m.
