Women's soccer picks up shutout over LBC

LANCASTER, PA - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team earned a 2-0 shutout win over Lancaster Bible College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Wednesday afternoon at Charger Field.

The Nittany Lions improved to 3-3-1 overall and 2-0 in the NEAC, while the Chargers drop to 1-6-1 on the year and 0-1 in the conference.

Berks came out strong on offense with six shots - including one off the crossbar - over the first 10+ minutes of action, but were unable to find the back of the net. Over the next 15 minutes, the Nittany Lions managed three corner kicks and a couple of shots, but again were not able to break through for a goal. Finally, in the 36th minute, Shelby Baker played a ball ahead to Megan Jardine, who then ripped a long shot that tipped off the keepers hands and into the net to give Berks a 1-0 advantage.

The Nittany Lions rattled off six more shots and collected another two corners over the final minutes of the first half, but the LBC was able to keep them from adding to the lead.

In the second half, the Chargers committed a foul that led to a free kick just outside the box. Alexa Lopez delivered the free kick on frame and the ball hit off the keeper and into the net to double the Nittany Lions lead.

Following the second goal, Berks continued to put pressure on LBC with seven shots (four on goal) for the remainder of the second half, but Rheanna Miles made four saves to keep the score within reach. Over that same time frame, the Chargers had four shots (two on goal), but Paige Elmy was able to make the save on both shots that were on target to record the win.

The defensive unit of Baker, Mackenzie Fredricks, Karina Raykova, and Jess Mandeville played a vital role in helping Elmy and the Nittany Lions earn their second straight shutout win. For the game, Berks outshot LBC by a 26-6 margin (12-3 on goal) and also held a 7-2 advantage on corner kicks. Elmy finished the contest with three saves and recorded the 18th shutout of her career. Her counterpart in net, Miles, finished the match with 10 saves.

The Nittany Lions return to action with a NEAC contest at Gallaudet University on Saturday, September 30 at 2 p.m.
