Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's soccer plays to 4-4 draw with LBC

LANCASTER, PA - The Penn State Berks men's soccer team scored early in both regulation periods, but were not able to keep host Lancaster Bible College's offense silent as the teams played to a 4-4 draw in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Wednesday afternoon at Charger Field.

The Nittany Lions move to 3-5-1 overall and 1-0-1 in NEAC South Division play, while the Chargers now sit at 3-4-2 on the season and 0-0-1 in the division.

Berks got on the board quickly when Manny Zavala's shot attempt was pushed away by the keeper and knocked into to the net by Nathaniel Shenk with his first goal of the season at the 2:11 mark of the opening half.

The lead was short lived as Chad Tolson tallied an unassisted goal at 3:41 to even the match at 1-all. The Chargers went out in front in the 17th minute when Rama Mugisha collected a loose ball and delivered a shot inside the left post.

With less than five minutes until the halftime intermission, the Nittany Lions were able to quick transition the ball from the defensive third up into the midfield. Cole Mays took a couple of dribbles and delivered a perfect through ball ahead to Brenden Valverde. Valverde collected the ball outside the box, took a couple of dribbles and delivered a drive into the top left corner for his 11th goal of the season to even the game in the 42nd minute.

Just 45 seconds into the second half, JON MERCIER controlled the ball at the top of the box and drilled a line drive into the top right corner to put Berks up 3-2.

Berks managed nine shots over the next 30 minutes, including three on goal, and a shot hitting off the post by both Mercier and Valverde. In that same time frame, LBC had four shots, just one on goal that was stopped by Jose Aparicio. But finally in the 75th minute, the Chargers broke through with the tying goal on Mugisha's second score of the contest.

Following that score, Mercier quickly put a shot on goal that was one of Vann Sutphin's five saves during the second half. Two minutes later, Mercier was able to find the back of the net with a fading shot over Sutphin's head into the back right corner, putting Berks up 4-3 at the 77:26 mark.

Again the Chargers were able to net the equalizer, this time in the 87th minute after a foul by the Nittany Lions gave LBC a free kick in the midfield.

The first overtime frame saw each team register one shot, both of which were blocked by the opposing teams defense, and both squads had a corner kick that did not result in any significant scoring chances.

In the second extra frame, Brian Garay had a shot on goal that was stopped by Sutphin. The Chargers managed three corners and had three shots, none of which were on goal.

The high scoring affair saw the teams combine on 48 shots, with Berks leading by a 26-22 margin and a 12-7 advantage in shots on goal. LBC finished the match with 10 corner kicks - including four in the overtime periods - while the Nittany Lions had six throughout the contest.

Gerardo Sosa and Aparicio combined on three saves in net for Berks, while Sutphin recorded eight stops for the Chargers.

The Nittany Lions will continue NEAC play with a trip to the nation's capital to face Gallaudet University on Saturday, September 30 at 12 p.m.
