Men's soccer blanks Gallaudet, 2-0

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Penn State Berks men's soccer team received a strong defensive effort and were powered by a goal in both halves en route to a 2-0 shutout over Gallaudet University in Saturday afternoon's North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Hotchkiss Field.

The Nittany Lions improve to 4-5-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the NEAC, while the Bison drop to 1-8 on the season and 1-2 in the conference.

Berks got on the scoreboard at the 28:52 mark of the first half after working a corner kick. Brenden Valverde made a short pass to Jon Mercier, who then sent a quick pass back to Valverde as he swung around the ensuing defenders. Valverde took a couple of dribbles and ripped a low liner past the keeper and just inside the near post for his 12th score of the season.

For the remainder of the opening period, the Nittany Lions had three more corner kicks and put one shot wide of the target, while Gallaudet managed two two corners and also had a shot go wide.

The Nittany Lions had 13 shots - six on goal - through 40+ minutes of action in the second half, but were not able to add to their lead. Finally, in the 88th minute, Berks netted an insurance goal when Valverde played a ball ahead to Cole Mays, who beat the keeper with a low shot into the far corner. The goal was the fifth of the year for Mays, which is the second most on the team.

Berks recorded 26 total shots with 11 going on goal, while the Bison were limited to only five shots (none on goal). Noah Means-Simonsen had nine saves in goal for the Bison, while Gerardo Sosa and Trent Johnson split time in net to share the shutout victory. The defensive unit of Tom Ulrich, Jakob Fischer, Galen Raab, and Brennan Scheetz did a phenomenal job of limiting the Bison offensive attack.

The Nittany Lions return to action with a trip to New York next weekend for a pair of NEAC contests. They will face Morrisville State College on Saturday, October 7 at 1 p.m., followed by SUNY Cobleskill on Sunday, October 8 at 12 p.m.
