Horst's career effort leads Berks to 3-2 comeback win over Ursinus

COLLEGEVILLE, PA - Alexis Horst smashed a career-high in kills to propel the Penn State Berks women's volleyball team to a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Ursinus College in a non-conference contest on Tuesday evening at Helffreich Hall.

The Nittany Lions picked up their third straight victory to improve to 6-7 overall, while the Bears drop to 4-10 on the year. Berks let a late lead slip away to fall behind 1-0 with a 27-25 setback in the first game, but bounced back nicely with a 25-15 win in game two to even the score at 1-all. The Bears rallied from a 22-14 deficit and took the third game (26-24), however the Nittany Lions had a dominating 25-6 triumph in the fourth game to gain the momentum heading into the fifth game.

In the decisive fifth set, the teams exchanged points in the early going before Berks recorded three straight points to go ahead 5-2 and eventually extended it lead to 13-7. Ursinus answered with three straight points to pull within three points at 13-10, but back-to-back kills by Horst sealed the deal the Nittany Lions.

Horst finished with a contest-high and career-best 21 kills, surpassing her previous high of 19 recorded earlier in the season against Immaculata University. The sophomore outside hitter only committed four errors on her 44 attempts for an efficient .386 hitting percentage. Horst collected 11 of those 21 kills in the final two games of the night, including six in the shortened 15-point fifth game. Horst also grabbed 15 digs and added one block assist.

Amia Boone, who was next on the team in kills, had a career-high nine kills with just one error for a .296 hit percentage. For the third straight match, Boone recorded two solo blocks. Abbie Carr and Maddy Kessler both chipped in seven kills, with Carr also adding a block assist. Madison Wojciechowski recorded 24 of the teams 80 digs, while Megan Lackman matched her career-high with 20 digs. Morgan Schwartz handed out 42 assists, marking the second time this season she reached 40+ assists, to go along with eight digs and one kill.

As a team, the Nittany Lions racked up 13 service aces on the evening. Schwartz led the team with a career-high five aces, followed by Laken Bankert with three, while Lackman and Carr both had two.

The Bears were led by Miranda Foster with 13 kills, followed by Paige DeAlba with nine and Allison Raff with eight. Sydney Gonzalez had a contest-high 26 digs and DeAlba added 14.

Over the five sets, Ursinus had 43 kills with 37 errors and had a team hitting percentage of .035, while Berks totaled 49 kills with 21 attempts and collected a .185 hitting percentage.

Berks has won each of the last four matches against Ursinus and lead the all-time series by a 4-1 count, with three of those four wins coming by a 3-2 margin.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Alvernia University in a non-conference contest on Thursday, September 28 at 7 p.m.
