Men's soccer falls to Arcadia in double OT

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks men's soccer team found the equalizer late in regulation and needed a clutch defensive save off of a header in the first overtime before falling just 49 seconds into the second overtime in a 2-1 setback to Arcadia University on Wednesday afternoon.

The two teams played a scoreless first half with both sides putting two shots on target, only to be denied by the opposing keeper. The Knights (5-1-1) came out strong in the second half and scored in the 47th minute.

The lead stayed that way until the 87:55 mark of the contest, when Brenden Valverde was dragged down inside the box to force a penalty kick. Valverde was picked to take the PK and the freshman forward successful converted with a line drive through the left side for his fifth goal of the season.

Arcadia managed one more shot in regulation, but the ball sailed wide of target. In the first overtime, the Knights worked a corner kick in the 95th minute. Bradley McKim was able to head the kick toward the near corner, but Manny Zavala stepped in and cleared the ball off the line to keep the score knotted at 1-all. Jose Aparicio also made a save in the final minute to send the match into another extra frame.

The second overtime started with the Nittany Lions sending the ball deep into Arcadia territory, but the Knight's quickly worked the ball down the field and forced a corner kick. Ryan Hammer inserted a perfect service into the box and McKim again connected with a header, this time beating the defense into the near corner for the winner at the 100:49 mark of the match.

Gerardo Sosa made two saves in the first half, while Aparicio finished with four stops in the second half and both overtime periods. The Knight's keeper Chris Watson finished with six saves to pick up the victory.

Arcadia outshot the Nittany Lions by a 17-10 margin, but just 9-7 with shots on goal. The Knight's also held a 6-2 advantage on corner kicks.

The Nittany Lions will open up North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) play when they host the College of Saint Elizabeth on Saturday, September 23 at 1 p.m.
