Women's volleyball competes at Colonial Classic Tournament

DANBURY, CT - The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team opened up play in the 2017 season with four matches at the Colonial Classic Tournament hosted by Western Connecticut State University on Friday and Saturday.

The Nittany Lions fell to Wentworth Institute of Technology, 3-0, and Rochester Institute of Technology, 3-1, on Friday afternoon. Host Western Connecticut State rallied for a 3-2 victory over Berks on Saturday morning and Simmons College finished off the weekend with a 3-1 triumph over Berks on Saturday afternoon. Despite not getting the results they would have preferred, the Nittany Lions put up a strong showing against four quality opponents to start off the new season.

In the season opener against Wentworth, Alexis Horst finished with a team-high seven kills and added 10 digs. Madison Wojciechowski led Berks with 13 digs and Morgan Schwartz handed out 14 assists to go along with seven digs and two service aces.

Against RIT, Horst recorded nine kills, while Megan Lackman followed with seven. Wojciechowski notched a contest-best 23 digs and Laken Bankert added 12. Schwartz had 27 assists, six digs, and three kills. Freshman Abbie Carr had a strong showing at the net with a team-high three solo blocks.

On Saturday morning, the Nittany Lions held a 2-1 lead over the WCSU, but the Colonials rallied to take the next two games and clinch the victory. Again Horst was the team leader in kills with 11, while Carr followed with eight, Lackman with seven, and Maddy Kessler with six. Wojciechowski (20 digs), Lackman (12 digs), and Horst (10 digs) all reached double-figures in digs and the team totaled 63 in the five-set match. Schwartz dished out 25 assists and had a team-high four service aces.

The final match of the weekend saw Horst record her first double-double of the season after registering 11 kills and 23 digs. Lackman chipped in six kills and 13 digs, while Wojciechowski hade a contest-high 25 digs. Carr had her strongest game of the weekend at the net with four solo blocks and four block assists, both of which were game high's.

Horst was recognized for her solid play by earning a spot on the All-Tournament Team as announced by WCSU at the conclusion of tournament. In the four games, Horst racked up 38 kills, 51 digs, three assists, two service aces, and two block assists.

The Nittany Lions return to action with their home opener on Thursday, September 7 at 7 p.m. against Immaculata University.
