Men's soccer blanked by Virginia Wesleyan

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks men's soccer team took a scoreless tie into the halftime break, but Virginia Wesleyan put up a goal early in the second half and tacked on two more in the final 10 minutes to top the Nittany Lions, 3-0, in a non-conference contest on Saturday afternoon.

Berks drops to 2-4 on the year, while the Marlins improve 4-1 overall.

In the opening half, Virginia Wesleyan recorded 10 shots with five going on goal, but Gerardo Sosa was there to make the save for each one. Sosa, who turned in a stellar performance, started off the match with a beautiful diving stop on the Marlins first shot on goal. The Nittany Lions had two shots, one of which was on target in the opening period which Nick Peterson made the save on.

With the score deadlocked at 0-0, the Marlins came out of the gates strong in the second half with a lot of pressure. They were able to break through for a score in the 47th minute when Ryan Kraus crossed a ball in front of net that Tyriq Wellman placed inside the far post.

From that point on, the Nittany Lions were able to put up seven shots (three on goal), but were not able to find the equalizer. Cole Mays put two of the shots on goal and Nathaniel Shenk had the other one. Then in the 80th minute, Ryan Perrault converted a penalty kick and Perrault added the final tally at 89:04 to put the contest well out of reach.

Sosa finished the match with a season-high seven saves, while Peterson recorded four saves to earn the shutout.

The Nittany Lions return to action with a non-conference home contest against Arcadia University on Wednesday, September 20 at 4 p.m.
