Women's soccer plays to draw with Wilkes in opener

EDWARDSVILLE, PA - The No. 19 ranked Penn State Berks women's soccer team opened up the 2017 campaign with a 1-1 draw on the road against Wilkes University in the season opening non-conference contest on Friday evening at Schmidt Stadium.

The Nittany Lions (0-0-1) jumped out to an early lead after Melissa Martin found the back of the next at the 12:00 mark of the first half. Sophomore Taylor Sassaman added the assist in her Berks debut. Berks was able to hold that lead through the rest of the opening period and early in the second half until Catherine Gregoire  scored following a corner kick in the 59th minute.

With the score tied, the intensity picked up with a slew of shots over the final 10 minutes, but both keepers were able to make the stops and each of the defenses came up strong. The only action in the first overtime frame was a corner kick by the Nittany Lions, but nothing came from it. In the second overtime period, the Colonels (0-0-1) came out strong and rifled off a shot just 12 seconds in. But Berks keeper Paige Elmy was able to make the save, which was her first four stops in the second overtime. Elmy finished the contest with 10 saves (one shy of matching her career-high), while Wilkes goalkeeper Courtney Stanley finished the match with six stops.

Martin and Caitlin Golden both recorded two shots on goal, while Megan Jardine, Karina Raykova, and Jess Mandeville all put one shot on target.

Wilkes held an 8-6 advantage on corner kicks and outshot Berks by an 18-9 margin (11-7 on goal).

The Nittany Lions return to action with a non-conference contest at Misericordia University on Sunday, September 3 at 2 p.m.
