Women's soccer falls on the road to Misericordia

DALLAS, PA - The Penn State Berks women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision on the road to Misericordia University in a non-conference contest on Sunday afternoon at Mangelsdorf Field.

The Cougars (2-0) claimed an early lead after Ashley Edgell was able to find the back of the net at the 5:09 mark of the opening half. The Nittany Lions tried to even things up when Caitlin Golden put a shot on goal in the 11th minute, but Alyssa Pojero was able to make the stop. After back-and-forth play in the midfield, Golden put another shot on target, but was again turned away by Pojero in the 27th minute. Moments later Paige Elmy made her second save of the half and neither teams were able to generate much offense for the remainder of the period.

Berks came out of the intermission strong and were able to get two corner kicks early, the second of which led to a header by Melissa Martin that went just wide of the net. Misericordia tacked on to its lead with a header by Jackie Stevens in the 55th minute to build a 2-0 advantage. From that point on, the Nittany Lions had six more corner kicks, but only managed one shot. The Cougars had four more shots over the final 35 minutes, one on goal that Elmy made the save on.

Elmy finished the contest with six saves, while her counterpart Pojero notched three stops.

The Cougars had a 14-5 advantage in shots (8-3 on goal), while Berks held a 9-1 advantage on corner kicks.

The Nittany Lions will host their home opener against Widener University on Saturday, September 9 at 2 p.m.
