Men's soccer drops season opener to Wilkes in overtime

WILKES, PA - The Penn State Berks men's soccer team suffered a 3-2 setback in overtime to Wilkes University in the season opener on Friday afternoon at Schmidt Stadium.

The Nittany Lions and Colonels both tallied a pair of goals in the opening half, but neither was able to break the deadlock in the second period. The decisive goal came at the 98:02 mark of the contest when Camry Huff registered his third score on the day.

Tom Ulrich recorded the first goal of the match at 15:30 with Jon Mercier providing the assist. The lead was short-lived as Wilkes was able to manage a penalty kick at the 16:58 mark, which Huff converted to even the score at 1-all. In the 22nd minute, Huff was able to get on a breakaway and find the back of the net to give the Colonels a 2-1 edge. Freshman Brenden Valverde tied up the contest with a goal from the top of the box in the 44th minute. Fellow freshman Brennan Scheetz recorded the assist on the play.

Gerardo Sosa made the start in goal for the Nittany Lions and finished with four saves in the first half. Jose Aparicio registered seven saves throughout the second half and the overtime frame.

Wilkes held a 7-6 advantage on corner kicks and outshot Berks by a 25-12 margin (14-6 on goal).

The Nittany Lions return to action with a non-conference contest at Albright College on Saturday, September 2 at 7 p.m.
