Men's soccer picks up shutout win over Albright

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks men's soccer team was powered by an offensive outburst in the first half en route to a 3-0 victory over local foe Albright College in a non-conference contest on Saturday evening at Shirk Stadium.

The Nittany Lions (1-1) tallied three goals in the opening half with the final tally coming just six seconds before the halftime intermission. With the offense doing their part, the Berks defense also turned in a solid performance to earn the teams first shutout of the season.

The first score of the match came at the 21:01 mark of the first half. Brenden Valverde sent a free kick into the box that the keeper mishandled and allowed the ball to fall to the ground. Cole Fagley came crashing in and was able to poke the loose ball into the open net to record his first goal of the season and just second of his career.

A little more than a minute later at 22:26, Jon Mercier was able to add to the lead after sending home a rebound over the keeper's save on shot by Cole Mays.

The bulk of play remained in the midfield over the next 20-plus minutes before Berks was able to generate some offense in the closing seconds of the half. After an Albright foul, Mercier delivered a free kick into the box that Mays was able to knock with the back of his foot into the near corner with just six seconds remaining on the clock.

Gerardo Sosa and Jose Aparicio combined on the shutout win in net for the Nittany Lions. Sosa registered a save on the only shot on goal in the first half, while Aparicio notched a pair of saves in the second half. The defensive back line of Tom Ulrich, Jakob Fischer, Mays, and Galen Raab helped keep the Lions (1-1) offense from getting scoring opportunities. The midfield play of Manny Zavala and Nathaniel Shenk kept the possession in Berks' favor throughout the contest.

Berks had the advantage on shots 9-7 (6-3 on goal), while Albright had a 1-0 margin on corner kicks.

The Nittany Lions will host Alvernia University in their home opener on Friday, September 8 at 7 p.m.
