Baseball splits NEAC doubleheader with Penn College

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team dropped its opener 15-6 to Penn College, but bounced back strongly with a 19-6 win in the second game to salvage a split in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

The Nittany Lions now sit at 10-11 on the season and 4-2 in the NEAC, while the Wildcats move to 11-6 overall and 3-1 in the conference.

In the opener, everything was working in Penn College's favor with a number of hits just inches out the Nittany Lions reach. Penn College did all of its scoring over the first four innings, with at least three runs in each inning. Berks made the game a little more respectable with five runs in the bottom of the sixth, but by then it was too little, too late.

Cory Fox and Cody Fidler both had a hit and drove in two runs, while Tyler Comport and Seth Endy had one hit and one RBI a piece. Jon Davis allowed two hits and struck out a batter in two scoreless innings of relief. Ben Wanner struck out two batters and did not allow any hits in one inning of relief.

The second game was a complete reversal of fortune for Berks. Comport set the tone early on the mound with two strikeouts in a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the first. The offense fed off that momentum with a six-spot in their half of the inning. Fox and Dalton Hughes had back-to-back walks and Fox came around to score on a double down the left field line by Toby Welk. A wild pitch scored Hughes and Welk was brought home on a single to center by Zach Reis. Reis then stole second base and came in to score on a single back up the middle by John McGarvey. Troy Salerno was plunked by a pitch with bases loaded and Hughes drew a bases loaded walk to force two more runs in the inning.

The Wildcats slowly worked their way back into the game with a run in the third and two more in the fourth inning. They pulled to within two runs after getting another one back in the top of the sixth to make it 6-4. Comport went 5.1 innings with six strikeouts and only three hits allowed, but he issued seven walks and allowed four runs. Mitch Renninger tossed the final 3.2 innings with one hit, scoreless relief to pick up his second save of the season.

Berks was able to put the game away with three runs in the sixth, four in the seventh and six more in the eighth.

Welk finished the game 4-for-6 with four RBI and two runs scored, while Reis was 3-for-6 with three RBI and one run scored. Fox, McGarvey, Dylan Gallagher, and Salerno all recorded two hits and had at least one RBI and one run scored. Hughes, who had one hit and was walked three times, had a career-high four runs scored, while Fox and Pearce Harhigh both scored three times. Salerno finished 2-for-4 with a double, one run scored and drove in a career-best four RBI.

The 19 runs and 17 hits in game two were both the most in a game this season.

The Nittany Lions return to action with a non-conference game at Ursinus College on Thursday, April 13 at 3:30 p.m.
