Baseball falls on the road at Ursinus

COLLEGEVILLE, PA -  The Penn State Berks baseball team suffered a 7-5 setback on the road to Ursinus College in a non-conference contest on Thursday afternoon at Thomas Field.

Both teams scored early and often, as the Nittany Lions (10-12) scored a single run in each of the first three innings and put up a two-spot in the top of the fourth to go ahead 5-4. But the Bears (18-6), who scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning and once again in the third, responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to jump ahead 7-5. From that point on the pitcher's settled down and the defenses stiffened up and did not allow a run the rest of the way.

Toby Welk matched a career-high with a 4-for-5 performance at the plate with a double, two RBI, and two stolen bases. The sophomore third-baseman raised his batting average to .419, which leads the team and ranks sixth in the conference. Welk also increased his RBI total to 22 on year, which is the third highest in the NEAC.

Cory Fox finished the game 2-for-4 with one RBI, one run scored, and one stolen base, while Pearce Harhigh was 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored. Dalton Hughes and Austin Madeja both had a hit and scored a runs.

Four separate threw 2.0 innings and combined on eight strike outs. Tyler Comport allowed just one hit and struck out a team-high four batters, while Brandon Griesemer had two strike outs and gave up two hits in scoreless relief.

The Nittany Lions return to action with a non-conference game at Penn State Harrisburg on Monday, April 17 at 4 p.m.
