Baseball picks up sweep over Gallaudet on the road

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Penn State Berks baseball team received strong starting pitching and the offense pounded out 11 extra base hits on the day as the Nittany Lions swept Gallaudet University, 6-1 and 15-2, in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Hoy Field.

Berks improves to 9-10 on the season and 3-1 in NEAC play, while the Bison fall to 5-19 overall and 0-4 in the conference.

In the opener, Steven Varner did not allow any hits over the first three innings on his way to a career-high eight strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work. He worked around trouble in multiple innings and did not surrender a run until the sixth inning. In the bottom of the first, the Bison had two runners on base and only one out, but Varner struck out the final two batters to escape the jam. The Bison led off the fourth inning with a walk and a base hit, but Varner got a strikeout, a fly to center and forced a one-hopper back to the mound for the final out.

Varner's day came to an end after a leadoff walk in the bottom of the seventh with Berks leading 6-1. Reliever Mitch Renninger walked the first batter and hit the next one to load up the bases with no outs. Renninger made a nice play snagging a chopper up the middle and fired home for the force out for out number one. The following batter hit a chopper down the third base line that Toby Welk fielded while stepping on third base and firing across the diamond to first base for the game ending double play.

Dalton Hughes and Tyler Comport both finished the game 2-for-4 with an RBI, a run scored, and a triple. Troy Salerno continued his scorching performance at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three RBI on a clutch bases clearing double in the top of the sixth inning. Zach Reis was 2-for-4 with a double, while John McGarvey and Welk both had doubles.

Berks tacked on its first two runs of the game in the top of third inning when a triple by Hughes scored Cory Fox all the way from first base. Welk drove home Hughes with his double to deep center field.

In the top of the sixth, Comport looped a single to right field to score McGarvey from second base. Austin Madeja and Pearce Harhigh had back-to-back bunt singles down the third base line to load up the bases. Salerno then roped a double to deep left center field that cleared the bases and put the Nittany Lions ahead 6-0.

Dylan Gallagher turned the longest pitching performance of his collegiate career in the second game. The senior right-hander tossed 8.0 solid innings, scattering five hits and allowing two runs (one earned) with three strikeouts. Gallagher sat the batters down in order in the second, fourth, and fifth innings and retired nine consecutive batters from the end of the third to the beginning of the sixth.

Cody Fidler entered in the bottom of the ninth and worked around a two-out walk to throw a hitless inning.

Damian Mace matched a career-high in hits by going 3-for-6 to go along with an RBI and a run scored. Harhigh went 2-for-3 with two doubles, one run batted in, and three runs scored. Welk was 2-for-5 with one double, three RBI, two runs scored, and two stolen bases, while Salerno went 2-for-2 with an RBI, and a run scored. Reis smacked another double and rounded out the Nittany Lions with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 an RBI and a run scored. Fox recorded a double to go with two RBI, three runs scored, and a stolen base.

The Nittany Lions return to action with a home NEAC doubleheader on Sunday, April 9 at 12 p.m.
