Women's tennis places nine on All-NEAC teams

CLARKS SUMMIT, PA - The Penn State Berks women's tennis team had five players earn first team and four on the second team at the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Individual Championship on Sunday afternoon at the Birchwood Tennis Club. (Results)

The duo of Erin Ginther and Kianna Anderson won the No. 2 doubles tournament to earn All-NEAC First Team honors. The pair entered as the second-seed in the tournament and claimed an 8-3 win against their opponents from Lancaster Bibles College in the semifinal round. Anderson and Ginther then upset the top-seed from Penn State Abington, 8-2, in the title match.

The No. 3 doubles of Lucrezia Pulcini and Brittney Mecca finished runner-up in their tournament to earn All-NEAC Second Team recognition. They were 8-1 winners in the semifinal round and were edged 8-6 by their Penn State Abington counterparts in the title match.

In the singles tournaments, Berks won the No. 4, 5, and 6 titles to earn all-conference first team awards. Laura Youwakim (No. 4) won her semifinal match by set scores of 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) and then led the title match 6-2 and led 1-0 before winning by walk-off. Pulcini claimed the No. 4 tournament with a 6-0, 6-3 in the semi's and 6-1, 6-2 in the championship. Mecca, at No. 6, pulled out a 7-5, 6-3 win in the semi and needed three-sets in the championship, with set scores of 7-5, 2-6, 11-9.

Ginther capped off her four-year career with All-NEAC Second Team honors in the No. 3 singles tournament. She won 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinal, but fell 6-4, 6-0 in the championship. At No. 2 singles, Anderson won her first match 6-4, 6-2, but dropped the title match by a count of 6-3, 6-3 to earn second team recognition.

The Nittany Lions conclude the 2016-17 season with an overall record of 9-7 and finished runner-up to Abington in the team tournament.
