Comport K's single-game record 14 to highlight sweep of Cazenovia

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Tyler Comport struck out a single-game program best 14 batters in six innings of work in game two that highlighted the Penn State Berks baseball teams sweep of Cazenovia College on Saturday afternoon. The Nittany Lions picked up a 6-1 win in the first game behind another pitching gem by Dylan Gallagher and went on to win the nightcap by a 15-2 margin.

The Nittany Lions moved back to .500 for the first time this season as they improve to 16-16 overall and 9-3 in the NEAC, while the Wildcats drop to 4-22 on the year and 3-10 in the conference.

In the opener, Gallagher tossed all seven innings with a three-hitter to earn his second straight complete-game victory on the hill. The senior right-hander struck out three batters and issued just one walk for the game. The lone run scored off of Gallagher came in the bottom of the fourth with a fly ball to center field to score the runner from third tagging up.

Cory Fox went 3-for-3 with a double and triple to pace the offense. In the top of the third, Fox tripled to center field to score TROY SALERNO and then came in to score on a wild pitch. Toby Welk roped a triple to right center in the fifth that scored Fox and
Dalton Hughes. Zach Reis finished off the scoring for Berks with a single up the middle that again plated Fox and Hughes.

In the second game, Comport dominated right out of the gate with a strikeout of all three batters in order in the first inning. He fanned the side in three innings and struck out two batters in two other innings. He surpassed the previous school record of 12 strikeouts by striking out the side in the sixth inning after allowing a leadoff double.

Cody Fidler added one strikeout in relief and Jon Davis recorded a pair of strikeouts in the ninth as the trio combined on a team record 17 total punchouts.

At the plate, Fox was 3-for-5 with an RBI and four runs scored, while Hughes finished 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Welk added another triple and went 2-for-4 with four runs batted in and one run scored. Mitch Amenta was 2-for-5 with three RBI and Brandon Griesemer added two hits and scored three runs.

The Nittany Lions will travel to SUNY Polytechnic for a NEAC doubleheader on Sunday, April 30 at 12 p.m.
