Baseball has four-game win streak snapped by York

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team suffered a 12-7 setback to York College (Pa.) in a non-conference contest on Thursday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

The Nittany Lions fall to 14-16 on the year, while the Spartans climb back to .500 at 17-17 this season.

Berks jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead after the first two innings. Zach Reis smashed his first home run of his career with an opposite field, 2-run shot to right field to score Toby Welk in the first inning. Earlier in the inning, Welk drove a double deep to center field that scored Dalton Hughes from first base.

The Nittany Lions tacked on a pair of runs in the second inning when CORY FOX singled down the left field line to score Austin Madeja and Pearce Harhigh.

Jon Davis turned in a solid outing in his first start of the season with 4.0 innings pitched. He scattered four hits and allowed just two runs, both of which came in the fourth inning. Davis was helped out by runner caught stealing in the first by Damian Mace and a great double play up the middle turned by Seth Endy.

After the Spartans took a 6-5 lead in the top of the fifth, Berks responded with one run in the bottom half to even the game. BRANDON GRIESEMER led off of a single to shallow left field and eventually came in to score on an RBI ground out by Madeja. York scored in the top of the seventh and the Nittany Lions again tied it up, this time with a line drive home run to left field by Welk, his fourth of the season.

York tacked on five runs over the next two innings and Berks was unable to generate any more scoring the rest of the way.

Justin Butler added 1.2 innings of strong relief, allowing three hits and one run while striking out one. Mitch Renninger surrendered just one hit in a scoreless ninth inning of relief.

The wind was blowing out all game long and the two teams combined on 11 extra base hits (6 doubles, five home runs). Welk and Madeja each had doubles, while Welk and Reis had the homers for Berks. Welk finished 2-for-5 with two RBI, and two runs scored and Fox went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Harhigh had a 2-for-2 showing with one run scored.

The Nittany Lions will travel to New York for a pair of important NEAC doubleheaders this weekend. They face Cazenovia College on Saturday, April 29 at 1 p.m. and SUNY Polytechnic on Sunday, April 30 at 12 p.m.
