Baseball drops non-conference tilt at Harrisburg

MIDDLETOWN, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team suffered a 6-2 setback on the road to Penn State Harrisburg in a non-conference contest on Monday afternoon.

Berks drops to 10-13 on the year, while Harrisburg improves its overall record 14-23.

Berks got on the board in the top of the first inning when Toby Welk connected for a solo home run. Harrisburg responded with four runs of their own in the bottom half of the first inning and tacked on one more run in both the second and fourth innings.

In the top of the seventh, John McGarvey and Austin Madeja had back-to-back singles and Troy Salerno came through with a two-out single to score McGarvey from third.

Madeja finished the game 2-for-3, while Welk went 2-for-4 with a stolen base to go along with his second home run of the season. Zach Reis, Tyler Comport, McGarvey, and Salerno all recorded a hit.

Berks had four relievers toss two innings each and combine on nine strikeouts. Steven Varner and Comport each had three strikeouts, while Dylan Gallagher had two and Mitch Renninger struck out one batter.

Berks returns to action with a non-conference road contest at Arcadia University on Wednesday, April 19 at 3:30 p.m.
