Baseball opens up NEAC play with split against LBC

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball saw its late rally come up short in a 7-3 setback in the game one, but salvaged a split with an 8-6 triumph in the nightcap as they opened up North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) play against visiting Lancaster Bible College on Saturday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

The Nittany Lions now sit at 7-10 overall and are 1-1 in the NEAC, while the Chargers move to 9-5 on the year and 1-1 in the conference.

In the opener, Berks rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to even the game at 3-3. But LBC countered with four unearned runs in the top of the sixth inning to build a comfortable cushion. In the bottom of the seventh, Seth Endy reached base on an error followed by back-to-back singles from Cory Fox and Dalton Hughes to load the bases with just one out. The Chargers kept the ball in the hands of Nate Burns, who got a fly out and ground out to earn the complete game victory.

Hughes finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while Fox was 1-for-1 with two walks and a hit by pitch. Toby Welk had an RBI single and Damian Mace scored a run.

Zach Reis tossed 5.2 innings, allowing 10 hits and surrendering seven runs (two earned). Steven Varner pitched 1.1 innings of relief with just one hit allowed while recording all four of his outs via strikeout.

In the second game, Tyler Comport earned the win with a career-high eight strikeouts. The junior right-hander gave up three runs on four hits and seven walks. Mitch Renninger entered the game in the top of the eighth inning and recorded the final four outs of the game thwart the Chargers comeback bid and earn his first save of the season.
