Baseball topped by North Carolina Wesleyan

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Penn State Berks baseball team suffered a 17-9 setback to North Carolina Wesleyan on Wednesday afternoon at the Ripken Experience.

The Nittany Lions (2-4) got on the board first after Zach Reis doubled and John McGarvey followed with a two-run home run. The Battling Bishops (12-5) countered with five runs over the next two innings, but Berks climbed back to 5-3 after a solo home run by Dalton Hughes in the top of the third. North Carolina Wesleyan responded with a five-spot in their half of the third to lead 10-3. In the fourth inning, Troy Salerno, Mason Pennypacker, and Seth Endy all had RBIs and Berks cut its deficit to 10-6, but the Bishops extended their lead to 17-6 over the next two at-bats to pull away.

Brandon Griesemer went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, while McGarvey finished 2-for-3 with two RBI, one runs scored and his first home run of the season. Salerno went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored, while Endy recorded two runs batted in.

Ben Wanner, Mitch Amenta, and Cody Fidler combined for four innings of shutout relief, allowing just four hits in that time.

The Nittany Lions will conclude their spring break trip with a doubleheader against Dean College on Thursday, March 9. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 10 a.m.
