Baseball splits doubleheader with Dean on Thursday afternoon

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Penn State Berks baseball team wrapped up its spring break trip with a split against Dean College on Thursday afternoon. The Nittany Lions rally fell short in an 8-7 setback in the opener, but they followed with an 11-9 victory in the nightcap. Berks finished its annual trip to Myrtle Beach with a record of 3-5.

In the opener, Cory Fox went 2-for-2 with an RBI, two runs scored, two walks, and two stolen bases. Toby Welk recorded his first home run of the season with a 2-run shot in the six inning that pulled the Nittany Lions within one run. Zach Reis finished the game 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Damian Mace and Mason Pennypacker both recorded hits.

Welk continued his torrid hitting pace in the second game with a 4-for-5 showing at the plate. The sophomore third basemen had two doubles to go along with three runs batted in, one run scored, and a stolen base. For the trip, Welk had a .519 batting average (14-for-27) with four doubles, one homer, nine RBIs, and three runs scored.

Dalton Hughes went 2-for-3 with two walks, three runs scored, and a stolen base, while Tyler Comport was 2-for-4 with an RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base. Dylan Gallagher also notched a multi-hit game after going 2-for-3 with a double, one runs scored, and one RBI. Troy Salerno added a hit and a runs scored, while Reis recorded a single, scored a run, and had one stolen base.

Justin Butler struck out five batters and earned the win after tossing the first 5.0 innings. Brandon Griesemer had three strike outs in his 1 2/3 innings of relief.

The Nittany Lions return to action with a non-conference game at Penn State Harrisburg on Thursday, March 16 at 3:45 p.m.
