Baseball earns split on third day of spring trip

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Penn State Berks baseball team did all of its scoring in one inning during a 7-5 victory over Manhattanville College on Tuesday morning, but later found themselves on the wrong end of a 13-6 decision to Greensboro College on the third day of the Ripken Experience.

The Nittany Lions (2-3) faced off against Manhattanville at TicketReturn.com Field, the home of the Cubs' Class A-Advanced Affiliate Myrtle Beach Pelicans. The Valiants jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first and held that advantage until the fifth inning when Berks plated all seven of its runs. In that big inning, the Nittany Lion collected five hits and took advantage of one error and three walks.

Berks led 7-1 heading into the top of the ninth when Manhattanville made things interesting with four consecutive singles to start the inning. The Nittany Lions got back-to-back ground outs to third base, but a run came across the plate on both of those at-bats. The next batter recorded an RBI single to pull the Valiants within two runs with runners on the corners. But the rally was shortened with an fly to first base to end the game and secure Berks' second win of the season.

Zach Reis turned in a strong effort in his first pitching start of the season with 8 2/3 innings pitched and three strikeouts. Mitch Amenta notched the save after closing the door on the Manhattanville rally with an infield fly out.

Toby Welk continued his great start to the season at the plate by going 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI. Mason Pennypacker collecting two hits and an RBI, while Tyler Comport had one hit and drove in two runs. Troy Salerno went 1-for-3 with one run, one RBI, and a stolen base.

Information for the Greensboro game will come later.

The Nittany Lions return to action with a game against North Carolina Wesleyan on Wednesday, March 8 at 12 p.m.
