Baseball holds on for win over Lehman College

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Penn State Berks baseball team held off a late push for its first win of the season with a 7-5 triumph over Lehman College on the second day of the Ripken Experience on Monday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions (1-2) fell behind 3-0 after Lehman's first two at-bats. They were able to cut the deficit to 3-2 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second and eventually evened the game a 3-all in the bottom of the fifth. The Lightning plated two runs in the top of the sixth inning, but Berks countered with a run in the bottom half of the inning, followed by two runs in seventh and one run in the bottom of the eighth.

In the top of the ninth inning and trailing by two runs, the Lightning had singles from its first two hitters followed by a fly out. The next batter loaded the bases with a single, putting the tying run in scoring position and the go-ahead run on first base with only one out. The Nittany Lions called upon senior right-hander Ryan Tenney out of the bullpen, who got the first batter he faced to strike out looking and forced the next batter to groundout to end the threat and secure the first save of his career.

Ben Wanner tossed 2 2/3 of scoreless relief to earn the first win of his collegiate career. The freshman right-hander scattered five hits and did not allow any walks, while striking out two batters. Brandon Griesemer, who received the start on the hill for the Nittany Lions, surrendered three runs on four hits, while striking out three batters. Freshman Jon Davis made his first appearance of the season with 1 2/3 innings of relief, allowing two hits and two runs (both unearned).

At the plate, the 2 through 6 part of the order combined for nine hits, six runs, four RBI, and five stolen bases. Cory Fox finished the day 2-for-4 with two runs scored, a double, and a stolen base, while senior Zach Reis was 2-for-5 with a run, one RBI, and two stolen base. Tyler Comport went 1-for-3 with two runs batted in, two walks, and one walk. John McGarvey and Toby Welk both recorded two hits and a run scored, with McGarvey also chipping in an RBI.

The Nittany Lions will take play a pair of games on Tuesday, March 7 beginning with Manhattanville College (10 a.m.), followed by Greensboro College (3 p.m.)
