Baseball opens season with a pair of close setbacks

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Penn State Berks baseball team opened up the 2017 season with a pair of tough setbacks to Catholic University of America on Sunday afternoon. The Nittany Lions fell 3-1 in the opener before the Cardinals earned a 4-3 walk-off win in eight innings in the nightcap to earn the twinbill sweep at the Cal Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

The Nittany Lions received strong pitching efforts in both contests. Mitch Renninger got the start in game one, going five innings. The senior right-hander scattered six hits and allowed three runs, while striking out three batters. Freshman Justin Butler made his collegiate debut with two strikeouts and one hit allowed in two scoreless innings of relief. In the second game, Steven Varner allowed one run on six hits in 4 2/3 innings. Mitch Amenta and Tyler Comport combined for just three hits allowed in three innings of relief.

In the two games, Toby Welk led the offense by going 4-for-6 with three RBI and a walk. Austin Madeja, Cory Fox, Dalton Hughes, and Troy Salerno all scored a run.

The Nittany Lions will continue their spring break trip with a single, 9-inning game against Lehman College on Monday, March 6 at 9 a.m.
